Bobbye Wilson Wade, age 85, of Dora, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2018. She was a retired Special Education Teacher from the Walker County Board of Education, having taught for 25 years at Sumiton School. She was the writer of the “Walking Back in Time” column for the Daily Mountain Eagle Newspaper in Jasper.
Visitation will be held Saturday, May 5, 2018, from 12 until 1 p.m. at New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 1 p.m. in the New Horizon Memorial Chapel. Rev. Thomas Reeves will officiate. Burial will follow in New Horizon Memorial Gardens.

HUDSON, THOMAS EDWARD “TOM CAT” 82, of Jasper, Alabama, passed away May 28, 2013, in Huntsville. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Thomas, parents Thurman and Ila Hudson, sister Doris Quinn, and brothers John F. and Dewey L. Hudson. Survived by his wife of 57 years Diane; son Michael (Cheryl), and grandchildren, Sarah and Nicholas, of Hayden, Alabama; son Bruce (Tanya), and grandchildren, Joseph, Andrew, and Stephen, of Pleasant Grove, Alabama; son Frederick of New York; brother Robert and (Gloria), of Bessemer, Alabama; extended family, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Thomas graduated from Dora High School in 1950, served in the Marines during the Korean War, was a retired independent truck driver, and a member of the Church of the Nazarene. DEASON, MARY FRANCES “FRAN” 78, passed away July 3, 2013 at her home in Johnson City, TN. Born in Dora, AL, to Burgess and Clifford W. JohnsonMary Francis Carter Deason, she was later adopted by Myrtle and William S. Carter after the untimely death of her mother. Fran graduated from Dora High School, worked for the FBI in Washington, DC, then returned to Birmingham where she married Richard W. “Dick” Deason. They had two daughters, Anna Deason Chapman, deceased, and Andrea Deason Clements of Johnson City. Fran spent most of her life as a homemaker, “Memom” to five grandchildren, and caring for others. Her joys were painting, working puzzles, and watching NASCAR and she will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Wellington Deason; daughter, Anna Deason Chapman; and brother, Jerry Mitchell. Glenn A. Parker, 76, of Huntsville passed away Sunday August 29, 2010. Glenn was aGlenn Parker United States Marine Corp Veteran, a graduate of Auburn University and a member of First Baptist Church. He worked as an Electrical Engineer with NASA in the Test Lab & Astrionics before retiring. LorJimmy Powell the son of Jewell and Dick Powell, passed away after a bout with cancer.
Powell is survived by his wife, Wanda Powell, daughters Lisa Hawkins of Venice and Sherri Powell of Sarasota, and a grandson, Jacob Hawkins. He also has several relatives who are Dora Graduates and live in this area.
Jimmy graduated from Dora High School in 1952.
He played football at Auburn on Coach Shug Jordan’s early teams. He was also an outstanding catcher on the Auburn baseball team. He was at one time one of the winningest High School coaches in the State of Florida. He coached for over 30 years at Venice High School in Sarasota Florida. He coached many college players and three who played at Auburn University – Alvin Mitchell, Mark Rose, and Tre Smith.
He is Billy Ray Powell’s brother
They are having a Memorial Service for him at Powell Davis Stadium in Venice Florida Wed. The stadium bears his name.

Coach James B. Powell, 75, of Nokomis, formerly of Dora, Ala., died March 27, 2010.
A celebration of life will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Powell-Davis Stadium at Venice High School in Venice. Burial will be private at Sarasota National Cemetery. Ewing Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Jim was head coach at Venice High School from 1962 to 1989. Along with coaching, he was a history teacher and athletic director. He graduated from Auburn University, where he lettered all four years in football and baseball and was an All SEC catcher. He later received his master’s degree from the University of Alabama. James T. Gann, born in Dora on May 26, 1933, passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.
The family will receive friends for visitation Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Sumiton.
Funeral services will be Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mike Butler will officiate.
Burial will follow at Shanghi Cemetery.
Gann was a graduate of Dora High School and held a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama and a master’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He served in the U.S. Army and the Alabama Army National Guard for 37 years. He was employed by Hayes Aircraft in Birmingham for nine years.
He was also employed by the Walker County Board of Education for 29 years. He taught at Dora Elementary School, Dora Jr. High School and T.S. Boyd School, and was assistant principal at Dora Junior High before becoming principal at T.S. Boyd school for 16 years.
He was the owner of Gann Vending Co. for 30 years. He was a Master Mason and a member of Acacia Lodge 670 in West Jefferson. Gann loved UA football and supported Tide Pride.
Gann was a lifetime member of UAB Alumni Association, a member of the University of Alabama Alumni, the National Education Association and the Alabama Education Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie and Lillie Nix Gann; sisters, Audie Lawson, Ruby Burchfield, Betty McLemore, Fay Tuggle and Mable Glover; and brothers, Travis Gann and Carlton Gann.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Joyce Tucker Gann; daughter, Terry Gann Crimm (Derrell); and granddaughters, Holly Joyce Crimm and Kara Michelle Crimm; family also includes, Sue Tucker, Ruth Sides, Bobbi Sue Tolbert (Danny), Steve Sides (Kathy) and Glynn McRae (Angeline); and several nephews and nieces.

James (Jim) Romine “PawPaw”, age 77, of McCalla, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, October 18, 2014. He James Rominewas in radio in the Birmingham area as Johnny Davis with WVOK and WZZK for many years. Mr. Romine served as Minister of Music with several churches in the Birmingham area and sang with The Plainsmen Quartet. He served his country as a radio operator in the US Navy. Mr. Romine was a member of Reno Baptist Church where he served as the Minister of Music. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Titus Romine and his mother, Gladys Cochran.
Mr. Romine is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Martha Romine; his children, Phillip Romine (Sharee) and Melissa Knight (Jim); grandchildren, Brittney (Hunter), Kayla (Blake), Jakob, Garrett and Brady; great-grandchildren, Easton and Olivia; and his sisters, Anna Jo Harbison (Ron) and Linda Jackson (Buddy).

Mr. John Edward Phillips, age 72 of Sumiton died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Baptist Medical Center Princeton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vollie and Cora Squires Phillips. Raymond E. “Ray” Robbins, 60, an engineer on the Apollo space program in the late 60’s and early 70’s died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, at his residence in Sumiton. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at Sumiton United Methodist Church with burial at McCormack Cemetery. The Revs. Alan Swindall, Mike Williams and Mark Adams will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 until 9 p.m. Wednesday at Sumiton United Methodist Church. New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home will direct. Robbins graduated from Dora High School in 1956 and from Auburn University with a B.S. degree in Industrial Management in 1960. After serving as a military intelligence officer in the U.S. Army and an engineer for Hayes Aircraft in Birmingham, he joined Boeing in Huntsville in 1963. In 1967, he moved to Boeing’s Houston Apollo Spacecraft program where he served as an Industrial Engineer. For his efforts on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, his name was entered into the Apollo/Saturn V Roll of Honor. Copies of this volume have been placed in the Library of Congress, in the Smithsonian, and with a monument on the moon. He also received a medal and citation for his work with others in the engineering and construction of the craft that bore astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins to the moon. After leaving Boeing, he returned to Walker County and worked in property development and residential construction. Robbins was a lifelong member of Sumiton United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, William Garland Robbins. He is survived by his mother, Bertha Mae Ingram Robbins of Sumiton; two sisters, Sarah Jane “Janie” Robbins of Birmingham and Sharon and her husband, Wayne Jones of Jasper; niece, Meredith Jones of Auburn; and two nephews, Britton Jones of Jasper and Brandon and his wife, Jodi Jones of Longview, Texas.

Gene Cagle Dora High School Class of 1958 Passed Away Tuesday, July 27, 2004.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Friday, July 30, 2004, at Warrior First United Methodist Church with burial in Warrior Cemetery. The Revs. Jonathan Todd and Audie C. Hodges III will officiate. Messmer-Goodwin Funeral Home is directing.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m., today, July 29, 2004, at Messmer-Goodwin Funeral Home chapel., and 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, July 30, 2004, at the church.
Billy Ray Davis, 66, of Dora, died Thursday May 17, 2007, at his residence. Funeral services were May 19, at New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home with burial in Shanghi Cemetery. Mr. Davis was a graduate of UAB and was retired from Alabama Department of Transportation with 42 years of service. He was a retired lieutenant colonel with the Alabama National Guard after 33 years. He was a member and deacon of Dora First Baptist Church.He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Virginia Davis of Dora; daughters, Joy Reeves and her husband, Tim, of Trussville, and Katie Bright and her husband, Milan, of Jasper; grandchildren, Molly, Caroline, Emily, Daniel Reeves and Dalton Bright; step-grandchildren, Shane and Jorden Bright; brother, Jimmie Davis; and sisters, Kate Parks and Helen Spadling; and a host of nieces and nephews.

April 7, 1942 – December 6, 2016 Jerry Grammer of Birmingham, AL passed away December 6, 2016 after a short battle with cancer. He is preceded in death by parents A.J. & Lorraine Grammer of Sumiton, Al. Jerry was born into a musical family.
By the time he was in high school he began playing with the Dixie Travelers. After attending Walker College he played trumpet and drums in various bands including The Cavemen & The Nomads supporting Charlie Rich, Dan Penn, Joe South, and many others. After a stint working on the Country Boy Eddie Show he teamed up with Jerry Woodard who had a hit with “Long Tall Texan”.
They traveled the South performing for years before settling in St. Simons, GA becoming the house band for The Gilded Cage. After losing his wife to cancer he made his way back to Birmingham eventually meeting and marrying his wife, Rita. He is survived by his wife Rita Grammer; his children Jerry Grammer Jr., Kim Perrin, Lanny Grammer (Clara), Lisa Grammer Johnson (Chopper), Julie Coleman Chapman (Seth); his grandchildren Cashel Grammer, Parker Cruz, Caleb Cruz, Sarah Abigail Chapman, Coleman Chapman, Ivan Grammer, Olivia Grammer, Clinton Grammer; his sisters Barbara Smith (Jack), Patsy Shipman (Jim) Jan McCracken as well as a host of nephews, nieces, and great grand children.

Billy Wayne Roberts, 69, of Hueytown died Thursday, September 16, 2010, at Medical West Hospital in Bessemer. Visitation is at 11 a.m. and the funeral at 1 p.m. Bell Funeral Home Sumiton is directing. Billy Wayne was a member of the Dora High School Class of 1959.
Bill Hatcher was born on July 8, 1941 and passed away on Friday, March 1, 2019. Bill was a resident of Empire, Alabama at the time of passing. He was a graduate of Dora High School, class of 1959, where he was a proud member of the Dora Bulldog football team. He was a retired U.S. Army Master Sargent. A Memorial service will be held on a date to be announced.
